Brass Monkey Challenge

The Brass Monkey Challenge

We meet on the Beach every morning, have a chat, take a daily photo before getting the sea for swim or dip. We believe there is safety in numbers and we encourage everyone to buddy up with at least one other of a similar standard and aim. We try to inject a bit of humour and we call our novices Cheeky Monkeys and to become a fully fledged Brass Monkey (and be entered into the Roll of Honour), Cheeky Monkeys must take at least one cold water swim with us in The Six Cold Months of TBM Season i.e. October to March.

You are Challenged to swim uith us, in each of the months below in one winter season!

Benefits of sea swimming

Benefits of Sea Swimming / Dipping

A quick, one‑page summary of why we do it — and some reputable links if you want to read more. (Informational only, not medical advice.)

Fitness & Mobility

Fitness
Low‑impact full‑body effort
Mobility
Looser movement after warming up
Rehab
Some use it as part of recovery routines
Warm up properly afterwards. Start slow, shorten time, and build up over weeks.

Mental health & Resilience

Mood
Many report stress relief & calm
Confidence
Small wins & controlled challenge
Sleep
Some report better sleep quality
If you feel dizzy, panicky, or “not right”, get out, breathe, and warm up.

Circulation & Inflammation (often reported)

Circulation
Cold‑to‑warm “wake‑up” effect
Inflammation
Many describe less general ache
Recovery
Often used post‑exercise
If you have heart or breathing conditions, or you’re pregnant, talk to a clinician first.
Safety basics: never swim alone, be cautious with rip currents, keep dip times short in colder months, and have warm layers ready (hat, gloves, towel/robe, hot drink).
